How a Toilet Tank Actually Works (30-Second Version)

When you flush, the flapper — a rubber seal at the bottom of the tank — lifts up, lets water rush into the bowl, then drops back down and seals the opening. That seal allows the tank to refill. The fill valve controls the refill: it opens when the water level drops and shuts off when the float (a ball or cup attached to the valve) rises back to the set water line. The overflow tube is the tall standpipe in the center of the tank — it’s a failsafe that drains excess water into the bowl if the fill valve doesn’t shut off in time. A running toilet means one of two things: the flapper isn’t sealing, or the fill valve isn’t shutting off. That’s the whole diagnostic.

The 30-Minute Dye Test: Find Out Which Part Is Failing

Before you buy anything, run this test. It takes five minutes of prep and twenty minutes of waiting, and it tells you exactly what to fix.

Remove the tank lid and drop 10–15 drops of food coloring into the tank water. Do not flush. Wait 20–30 minutes. Then check:

Step-by-Step: Replace the Flapper

  1. Shut off the water supply. The shutoff valve is on the wall behind and below the toilet. Turn it clockwise until it stops. Then flush the toilet to empty the tank. Use a sponge to soak up whatever water remains at the bottom — you want a dry tank to work in.
  2. Unhook the flapper chain from the flush handle arm. Note which hole the chain clip is in — you’ll put it back in the same spot.
  3. Slide the flapper ears off the pegs on the sides of the overflow tube. Some flappers have a collar that loops around the tube instead — just lift it straight up and off.
  4. Inspect the valve seat. This is the flat ring the flapper was sealing against at the bottom of the tank. Run your finger around it. If it feels rough or has mineral buildup, pour a small amount of white vinegar on a cloth and scrub it clean. A dirty or pitted seat will ruin a new flapper fast.
  5. Fit the new flapper. Slide the ears onto the overflow tube pegs (or loop the collar over the tube) until they snap into place. Give each side a gentle tug to confirm it’s seated.
  6. Attach the chain to the flush arm. You want about ½ inch of slack — just enough that the flapper can drop and seal fully when you’re not flushing. Chain too tight: the flapper gets held open a hair and the toilet keeps running. Chain too loose: weak, incomplete flush. Trim or tuck any excess chain so it can’t slip under the flapper and break the seal.
  7. Turn the supply valve back on counterclockwise and let the tank fill. Watch the flapper as it fills — it should sit flat and still.
  8. Test flush. Watch the flapper lift, drop, and seat cleanly. Listen for a full stop — no hiss, no trickle. If it’s still running, check the chain slack first, then move to the gotcha list below.

If It’s the Fill Valve Instead

If the dye test showed water running into the overflow tube, the fill valve needs replacing. The Fluidmaster 400A is the industry standard for a reason — it fits almost every toilet, adjusts easily, and lasts years.

  1. Shut off the supply valve and flush the tank empty. Sponge out the remainder.
  2. Disconnect the supply line from the bottom of the tank. Have a towel ready — there will be some drips. Use an adjustable wrench if it’s hand-tight but stuck.
  3. Unscrew the plastic locknut on the underside of the tank (where the fill valve shank passes through). Turn it counterclockwise. The old fill valve will lift straight out from inside the tank.
  4. Drop in the Fluidmaster 400A. The shank goes through the same hole. Hand-tighten the locknut underneath — snug, not cranked. Over-tightening cracks the tank.
  5. Reconnect the supply line and turn the water back on. Let the tank fill and watch the water level. It should stop about 1 inch below the top of the overflow tube. If it’s too high or too low, adjust the float height using the clip or dial on the valve body (the Fluidmaster 400A has a clearly marked adjustment stem — twist to raise or lower).
  6. Test flush and confirm the fill valve shuts off cleanly when the water reaches the correct level.
