If an outlet suddenly has no power, the cause is almost always one of three things: a tripped GFCI receptacle somewhere else on the circuit, a tripped breaker, or a loose connection inside the outlet box. Start with the GFCI reset buttons before you touch anything else, because that one step fixes a dead outlet more often than every other cause combined.
Below is the order a working handyman actually checks things in, from the free five-second test to the point where you should put the screwdriver down and call someone licensed.
Start here: the 60-second safety check
Before you diagnose anything, rule out a real hazard. Put your hand near (not on) the outlet cover. If the plate is warm, discolored, buzzing, or smells like hot plastic or fish, that is arcing behind the wall. Switch off the breaker for that circuit and call a licensed electrician. Do not keep testing it.
If the outlet is cool and quiet, plug a lamp or phone charger you know works into it. A dead device is not proof of a dead outlet, and half the “broken outlet” calls a handyman gets turn out to be a bad charger.
1. A GFCI outlet somewhere else has tripped
This is the single most common reason a working outlet goes dead overnight. One GFCI receptacle protects several ordinary outlets downstream of it. When it trips, every outlet on the load side goes dead, and the GFCI itself may be in another room entirely.
Walk the house and press the RESET button on every GFCI you can find. Look in the bathrooms, the kitchen counters, the garage, the laundry area, the basement, the crawlspace, and outdoors under weatherproof covers. Also check any GFCI breaker in the panel, which has its own small test button.
If RESET will not stay in and pops straight back out, something on that circuit is genuinely faulting. Unplug everything on the circuit and try again. If it holds with nothing plugged in, plug devices back one at a time until it trips, and you have found your culprit.

2. The circuit breaker tripped
Open the panel and look along the row of breaker handles. A tripped breaker usually sits slightly out of line with its neighbours, or in a middle position rather than fully ON. Some show a small orange or red window.
To reset it properly, push the handle firmly all the way to OFF first, then back to ON. Flicking it straight from the middle position often does nothing, which is why people assume the breaker is fine when it is not.

3. A wall switch controls that outlet
In a lot of bedrooms and living rooms, one half of a receptacle is wired to a wall switch so a floor lamp can be turned on from the doorway. If the outlet has “never worked”, this is usually why.
Flip every switch in the room, including the ones that seem to do nothing, and retest. Then try both the top and bottom sockets separately, because commonly only one half is switched.
4. Loose or “backstabbed” wire connections
Most receptacles offer two ways to attach wire: wrapped around the side screws, or pushed into small holes in the back. Those push-in back-stab connections rely on a thin spring clip, and after years of heat cycling they loosen and lose contact. Because outlets are often daisy-chained, one failed back-stab kills every outlet downstream of it too.
That is the tell-tale pattern to look for: not one dead outlet, but a run of dead outlets. The failure is usually in the last outlet that still works, at the point where power leaves it.
The fix is to switch the breaker off, confirm the wires are dead with a non-contact voltage tester, pull the receptacle out, release the back-stabbed wires and land them properly on the side screws instead. Curl the wire clockwise around the screw and tighten firmly.

5. The receptacle itself has worn out
Outlets are mechanical. The brass contacts inside lose their grip after a decade or two of plugs going in and out, especially in a kitchen or workshop. A giveaway is a plug that falls out under its own weight, or power that flickers when you wiggle the cord.
Replacement is inexpensive and straightforward: breaker off, verify dead, photograph the existing wiring before you disconnect anything, then transfer the wires one at a time to the new device. Match hot to the brass screw, neutral to the silver screw, and ground to the green screw.
If you are replacing an outlet in a kitchen, bathroom, garage, laundry area or outdoors, current code expects GFCI protection there. Fit a GFCI receptacle rather than a plain one.
6. A loose neutral or open ground further upstream
If several outlets are dead and lights on the same circuit behave strangely, dim, or brighten when appliances cycle, suspect a loose neutral. This is not a DIY repair. A failing neutral can put uneven voltage across your appliances and damage them, and tracking it down means working in the panel.
Call a licensed electrician for this one. The same goes for any outlet where a plug-in tester reports an open ground or reversed polarity that you cannot trace to a single device.
7. The whole circuit or part of the house is out
If a large area is dead but the breakers all look normal, check whether you have lost one leg of the incoming service. A quick sign: some 120-volt circuits work, others do not, and 240-volt appliances like the dryer or range behave oddly. That is a utility or main-panel problem, not an outlet problem. Call the power company and an electrician.

When to stop and call an electrician
Call a professional if you see or find any of the following: scorch marks, melted or brittle insulation, a burning smell, a breaker that trips immediately on reset, aluminum branch wiring, cloth-insulated wiring, an outlet box with no ground wire, or wiring you cannot confidently identify.
