Why Your Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping (and How to Fix It Safely)
You flip the switch, the lights go out — or a whole section of your house just dies. You head to the panel, see a breaker sitting in that awkward middle position, push it back, and twenty minutes later it trips again. Most people assume the breaker is shot or that they’re looking at a $500 electrician call. Nine times out of ten, neither is true. The fix is a diagnosis, not a replacement. What the Tripping Is Actually Telling You
There are three root causes, and the way a breaker trips gives you a solid clue about which one you’re dealing with.
Overloaded circuit. This is the most common cause by a wide margin. A circuit has a maximum amperage — usually 15 or 20 amps for general household circuits, 30–50 amps for dedicated appliance circuits. When the total draw from everything plugged into that circuit exceeds the limit, the breaker heats up and trips. It doesn’t happen instantly — it’s thermal, which means you might run fine for 10 minutes before it pops. Summer is prime season for this because window AC units draw 5–15 amps on their own. Add a fan, a lamp, and a phone charger on the same circuit and you’re right at the edge.
Short circuit. A short happens when a hot wire (black) touches a neutral wire (white) somewhere it shouldn’t — inside a device, inside a wall, or in a damaged cord. Short circuits trip breakers fast and hard. If the breaker trips the instant you plug something in or the second you flip a switch, that’s your signal. Short circuits can cause sparks and carry a fire risk. Treat them seriously.
Ground fault. A ground fault occurs when a hot wire contacts a grounded surface — a metal box, a wet surface, a person. GFCI outlets and GFCI breakers are specifically designed to catch these, and they’re required by code in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor circuits. If a GFCI breaker or outlet is tripping, it’s doing its job. Don’t defeat it. Find the cause.

Step-by-Step: Find What’s Tripping the Breaker
- Safety first — before you do anything else. Know where your main breaker is in case you need to cut all power to the panel. Make sure your hands are completely dry. Work with one hand when near an open panel — keep the other hand in your pocket or behind your back. This is not a figure of speech; it’s the one-hand rule that prevents current from crossing your chest. Safety: Never touch the main bus bars (the thick silver rails running vertically through the center of the panel). Those are always live even when the main breaker is off. - Unplug everything on that circuit. Every lamp, appliance, charger, and device connected to outlets on that circuit. Turn off any hardwired lights on the circuit using their wall switches.
- Reset the breaker with nothing on the circuit. If it holds, you have an overload problem — not a wiring problem. Start plugging things back in one at a time, waiting a minute or two between each. When it trips again, the last thing you plugged in is either the overload culprit or a faulty device.
- Test each device individually on a known-good circuit. If plugging a specific appliance causes the breaker to trip instantly — even on a different circuit — that appliance has an internal short. The fix is repairing or replacing the device, not the breaker.
- Check all cords on the circuit for damage. Look for frayed insulation, pinched cords under furniture, cords run under rugs, or cords that have been stapled into walls. Damaged insulation is a short circuit waiting to happen. Safety: Use your non-contact voltage tester to confirm a circuit is dead before handling any wiring or opening any outlet box.
- Calculate total amperage load on the circuit. Add up the wattage of everything you normally run on that circuit. Divide by 120 (volts) to get amps. A 15-amp circuit should stay below 12 amps continuously (80% rule). A 20-amp circuit should stay below 16. If your total load exceeds that, you need to redistribute appliances — not just reset the breaker.
- Inspect outlets and switches on the circuit for loose connections. Safety: Turn the breaker OFF and verify with your non-contact tester before opening any outlet or switch box. A loose wire connection creates resistance, generates heat, and can cause intermittent faults. Tighten any loose terminals with a screwdriver. Any outlet that is discolored, has a burning smell, or shows physical damage should be replaced.
- Test the breaker itself last. If the circuit holds with everything unplugged but trips under even a very light load — say, a single lamp — and you’ve ruled out a device issue, the breaker itself may be failing. Use a multimeter set to AC voltage at the outlet to check whether the circuit is actually delivering voltage properly. A confirmed bad breaker needs to be replaced with an exact-match replacement (see Tools section above). If you’re not comfortable doing that, this is a reasonable point to call an electrician.

What to Check If It Keeps Tripping
GFCI and AFCI nuisance trips. Modern kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms in newer homes often have GFCI or AFCI breakers. These are more sensitive than standard breakers. An AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) can trip from an older appliance with a brush motor — like a vacuum cleaner or a power drill — because the motor arcing looks like a fault to the breaker. This isn’t a defect; it’s the breaker doing its job. In some cases the appliance is the problem. In others, it’s worth consulting an electrician about whether the AFCI sensitivity is appropriate for the circuit’s use.
Shared neutrals. In older homes, two circuits sometimes share a single neutral wire. If those two circuits are on the same leg of the panel (both should be on opposite phases), current can build up on the neutral and cause erratic tripping. This is a wiring issue that needs an electrician to diagnose properly.
Motor inrush current from AC units or refrigerators. Large motors draw significantly more current at startup than during normal running — sometimes 3–6 times the rated running amperage. A breaker that trips right when an AC unit or refrigerator compressor kicks on may be undersized for that dedicated circuit, or the motor itself may be starting to fail. Check that dedicated appliance circuits are properly sized (most window ACs need at least a 15-amp dedicated circuit; central AC needs 30–50 amps).
Hidden shorts inside walls. If you’ve gone through every device and outlet and the circuit still trips, there may be a damaged wire inside a wall — from a nail, a screw, pest damage, or physical wear. At this point, stop DIYing and call a licensed electrician. Locating a fault inside finished walls requires specialized equipment.
A breaker that’s simply worn out. Breakers are rated for a finite number of trips. Older panels or breakers that have tripped hundreds of times over the years may become unreliable. If yours is more than 20–25 years old and trips unpredictably, replacement is reasonable — again, with an exact-match breaker for your panel brand.
When to Call a Licensed Electrician
Some situations are not DIY territory, full stop. Call a licensed electrician if:
- You smell burning plastic or a burning odor coming from the panel or any outlet.
- You see scorching, blackening, or melted plastic anywhere in the panel or on wiring.
- The panel itself feels hot to the touch.
- A breaker trips repeatedly with nothing plugged into the circuit.
- You hear crackling, buzzing, or hissing inside the panel.
- Your home has aluminum branch-circuit wiring (silver-colored wires at outlets, common in homes built 1965–1973). Aluminum wiring requires special outlets, connections, and a licensed electrician familiar with it.
- You need to replace the main panel or add circuits — this requires a permit and inspection in virtually every jurisdiction.

Is it safe to keep resetting a tripped breaker?
Resetting once to test is fine. If it trips again immediately or within seconds, stop. Repeatedly forcing a breaker back on when something is actively wrong on the circuit risks overheating the wiring and starting a fire. Find the cause first, then reset.
Can too many things plugged into a power strip trip a breaker?
Absolutely. A power strip doesn’t add circuit capacity — it just adds outlets. Everything plugged into that strip still draws from the same circuit. If the combined load exceeds the circuit’s rating, the breaker trips. Power strips with surge protection don’t change this equation.
Why does my breaker only trip in summer?
Almost certainly your air conditioning load. Window AC units and central AC systems draw heavy current, especially on startup. If the circuit is also running lights, fans, or other appliances, you’re pushing past the limit when the AC kicks on. The fix is usually moving other loads to a different circuit or adding a dedicated circuit for the AC.
Does a tripped breaker mean my wiring is dangerous?
