Step-by-Step: Thawing and Fixing a Frozen AC

  1. Kill the power first. Go to the outdoor disconnect box next to the condenser and pull the disconnect, then flip the breaker for the AC at your main panel. Never work around a coil or a frozen line with the system energized.
  2. Switch the thermostat to “Off,” then to “Fan Only.” Fan-only mode circulates room-temperature air across the coil and speeds up the thaw without running the compressor and making more ice.
  3. Do not chip, scrape, or pick at the ice. A refrigerant line is thin copper or aluminum tubing, and one slip punctures it — now you’ve got a refrigerant leak instead of a filter change. Let it thaw naturally or with fan-only air.
  4. Give it time — usually 2 to 4 hours, sometimes overnight for a thick buildup. Lay towels and a shallow pan under the indoor unit to catch meltwater.
  5. While it thaws, pull and inspect the air filter. This is the number one cause. If you can’t see light through it, that’s your problem.
  6. Check the condensate drain line. A clogged drain backs up water near the coil and pan, which contributes to icing. Pour a cup of white vinegar down the drain access or use a wet/dry vac at the outside termination to pull the clog free.
  7. Walk your house and check every supply and return vent. Closed dampers, blocked returns, or a dusty return grille choke airflow the same way a dirty filter does.
  8. Once the coil is fully thawed and dry, inspect it. If it’s caked in grime, spray with no-rinse coil cleaner, let it sit, then wipe the excess. Hose off the outdoor condenser coil and straighten bent fins with a fin comb.
  9. Replace the filter, close everything up, restore power, and run the system normally. Watch it for the next 24 hours to confirm the fix held.
