How to Fix a Dryer That Takes Too Long to Dry

  1. Power off and unplug — first, always.
    For electric dryers: unplug from the 240V outlet. For gas dryers: unplug the electrical cord AND turn the gas shutoff valve behind the unit to the closed position (handle perpendicular to the gas line). Do not skip this step. You’re about to reach behind the unit and, later, open up the cabinet. There’s no safe shortcut here.
  2. Clean the lint trap — and the housing, not just the screen.
    Pull the lint screen out completely. Peel off any lint buildup and rinse the screen if it’s coated with dryer sheet residue (hold it under water — if water doesn’t pass through freely, it needs cleaning).   3. Disconnect and clean the exhaust duct.
    Pull the dryer away from the wall. Loosen the hose clamp at the back of the dryer where the duct connects and at the wall vent collar. Remove the duct. Keep bends to 45° or less where possible. Every 90° bend in duct adds the equivalent of 5 feet of straight duct to your vent run.
  5. Reconnect everything and run a test cycle.
    Reconnect the duct at both ends with foil tape and clamps. Push the dryer back carefully — leave 4–6 inches of clearance at the back wall. Run a high-heat cycle with a damp load and go outside to feel the airflow at the exterior vent cap. You should feel a strong, steady blast of warm air. If it’s weak or barely noticeable, there’s still a restriction somewhere in the run.
  6. Test the thermal fuse with a multimeter.
    If cleaning the vent didn’t fix it, the thermal fuse is your next suspect. It’s a one-shot safety device that blows when the dryer overheats — often from a clogged vent. Once it blows, the dryer either won’t heat at all or runs intermittently. Access it via the back panel (most models) or front panel (some Whirlpool/Maytag). Set your multimeter to continuity mode.
